Due to extraordinary legal expenses from an ongoing lawsuit, the SCA has determined that our best option is to raise membership fees in most classes by $8.00, effective January 1, 2011. Family membership rates will not increase, although the family cap for memberships will be raised by $5.00 effective the same time.
When we indicated in 2009 that membership fees would raise gradually over the next three years, we were not fully aware of the extent and impact of the legal fees required to defend our organization. Earlier this year we received a realistic projection for legal expenses through 2011. We are committed to protecting not only the SCA Inc., but the assets of every SCA group. This lawsuit may go on for additional years and cost-cutting alone will not be sufficient.
We are formulating a plan to get the SCA back on track and are selecting options to restructure our operating business model. One option is a move to electronic kingdom newsletters with a print-on-demand option for those who would like to get their version in hardcopy. With these changes, there are many details to consider
including: legal issues surrounding the fulfillment of our current subscription liability; the development of an electronic publishing framework for use by kingdom chroniclers that supports both web-publishing and print-on-demand; writing relevant changes to governing documents, officer handbooks, and kingdom procedures; and making dramatic programming changes to the SCA website and corporate systems.
The current migration of corporate and Society officer email addresses to a more robust infrastructure is a step in this direction.
It is our hope that as financial circumstances evolve we will be able to re-evaluate the entire membership fee structure once the effectiveness of the restructured business model can be determined. This would include evaluating the necessity of collecting NMS as well as potential reductions in membership fees.
There will be many stages in this process where feedback will be needed and solicited. We want to be completely transparent with any changes that will be made, and will share details as they become available. As every year, the budget will be posted on the SCA website as soon as it is approved for your review. Our job is to keep you as fully informed as possible and in that spirit we welcome any and all questions and comments. For the moment, please submit questions and comments through comments@sca.org.
Finally, this process will be very difficult and take many months to complete, so please bear with us. During this time, Board members will be attempting to attend as many events as possible to be available to answer your questions.

ARTWalk was a huge success! We'll be doing that again January 7th, 2011 (Friday - And would there be interest to walk around Saturday afternoon as well? I think it's 11am-4pm During the craftshow?
And another lesson learned, if you are in line for a video game at midnight, bring flyers for the faire - we didnt, but should have!!!!
If you would like a copy of the flyer to make your own copies, reply to this email, I'll send it over to you, the more flyer we get out, the better chances of a great well attended medieval faire in January!
This weekend!
Friday night 12/10 - Yes we are back to regular schedule - 5pm - North Fort Myers - Social gathering/ Fighter Practice - we'll make something simple for dinner, but bring something to share, drinks, snacks, whichever :)
Saturday 12/11 - 2pm-6pm - Craft Gathering - We have the Medieval Faire in January coming up, maybe you have a project that needs finishing ... Or you want to learn something new, I'm sure someone will be crafting something ....

Email for week of Thanksgiving 2010
What a wonderful Revel we had this past weekend! Thank you for making it such a fun even for all!
Just a couple things this week.
Our official website for the shire is currently
http://tinyurl.com/FtMyersSCA
Any other site, group, mailing list is unofficial, which includes our Facebook group, and SWFLMedievalists yahoo group, and my blog. Both groups are great ways to share information amongst each other currently, and a new official website is in the works. I had changed the format of the weekly email into a blog, for a change of pace, while Gillian was out. I will still be updating the blog weekly, to keep up with calendar things, and what ever info I've been asked to share on there from Lucrezia or others, however, again it's all unofficial. If there are people interested in information about the shire, please direct them to the tinyurl site - it's a basic forum site that started when the shire started. In time a new site will go live.
If you are on facebook - we do have an unofficial group - Shrie of Trisel - join it if you'd like, when I post on the blog, I also post bits in the group, it seems like we have many active members using the facebook group.
If you havent heard, there is an unofficial group on yahoo that Sieggy has graciously shared all his internet resources - SWFLMedievalists - I dont know the link off the top of my head, but you can access that via my blog ... same with the facebook group link.
Ultimately all these unofficial sites will be linked from the new official sites and it will be all in one spot :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm working on getting the photos up in a picasa gallery, however, if you are on facebook, Warin Maguidahir has loaded all of them taken with one of the cameras, so become his "friend" so you can see them :)
Please do not forget about thanksgiving weekend in Labelle - RSVP is required, as it is a free event and they are also graciously offering food. Read about it here http://ladymargery.blogspot.com/2010/11/thanksgiving-weekend.html - there are a number of us who have already RSVPd for Saturday - garb is required - just like our Revel :)
Lady Lucrezia needs our help again :)
Greeting unto the Shire.
It's that time of year when your seneschal begs assistance at our local Faire. The Faire takes place on Jan. 15, 16, 22, 23 from 9-6. I need help with ticket sales in the main gate area. If you are willing to donate a couple hours of your time to sell tickets I offer you entry into the faire for that day.
I have to begin making up my schedules and have many many openings at this time. Please come out and help us. We are a charity and support Orange River Elementary School. I must say that if you commit, you really have to come and volunteer. There will be no one to fill in for you.
If you have building talents and can donate time prior to the show--jan.12, 13, 14,- to build the stages etc. Please let me know. We need help. We are a very small Kiwanis club and can always use strong arms and carpentry skills.
Have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving everyone! See you this weekend in Labelle!
Tablet Weaving Class this Friday!!!!
Thora will be graciously teaching some basic tablet weaving this coming Friday, 11/5/2010 at the social gathering. If you would like to take part in this workshop, please bring a belt with you, the wider the better (it's more comfortable when it's sitting against your back). If you do not have a belt, that is ok too, a rope will do just fine. No other materials are needed, Just yourself and a belt :)
Thora will provide the rest. But if anyone has pearl Cotton they really want to use, she'll show you how to thread the cards and you can use your own textiles or hers.
There is no charge for the class, but assistance setting up cards for a future class is appreciated, but not required.
I know i'm looking forward to learning something new. Are you?
a few words from our Seneschal
Greetings
Once again I am in awe of how wonderful and amazing my shirefolk are. I asked for some assistance at a school function and, of course, the Shire stood up and kicked butt. You smiled and played and let little, mean people beat you. Thanks rapiers. You shared your knowledge and instructed many. Thanks Sofia and Emilio. You even suited up my bosses and let them play with heavy weapons - thanks Yuri and Tuchux!!! What great pics we have of the day.
To all of you, I am proud to have you as friends and shirefolk. You are so kind and always are there to help with the crazy things I ask of you. Thanks for all you do to make the Shire of Trysel the best Shire in Trimaris.
We still have room for a couple more volunteers for teaching SCA classes during the revel. It doesn't have to be extravagant, just something to share with others, and they can walk away with an "Ah ha" moment :) at the end. So far we have the following:
Getting started in the SCA - using thrift shop treasures by Lady Lucrezia
Drop Spinning by Sophia
Devices & Heraldry by Sieggy
We haven't scheduled time blocks yet, so if you are teaching a class, or want to teach a class, please let me know, I would imagine 30 minutes - 45 minutes per class? Please correct me if I am wrong.
Also, a reminder, to attend a class, it is one non-perishable food item, per person, per class.
Request for the Revel:
As a shire now's the time to come together, work together, and play together.
Do you have a pavilion that the shire could use for the weekend?
(we need a number of them, for feast, classes, and list fields)
Tables and chairs?
Do you have a craft or topic of interest that you would be willing to share your knowledge for a class for the revel?
It could be something as a craft, a musical instrument, even living in the modern world while preparing for the SCA (how to shop and craft as thrifty as possible - Great idea Lu :) - Please let me know.
There's also a thought of renting a porta potty, would you be willing to donate a few dollars for that purpose? - Please email me at ladymargerymcguire@gmail.com – or you can leave a comment on this blog post, whichever is easier.
A message from our Seneschal, Lady Lucrezia sarta di Napoli
I'm in need of people to do a five day - Oct. 23 - 24-29-30-31- Halloween spooky event at lakes Park. If you and a few of your favorite friends would be interested in putting on a five day - from 6:30-10:30 PM - scary vignette- I would be very appreciative. I believe we are also going to award a monetary prize for the best vignette. Please let me know whether you'd be interested or not.
If you want to help out, it's a Kiwanis and Lakes Park collaborative event.
Greetings one and all,
Once again our shire of medieval friends has been asked to participate in our Fall Festival at Sunshine Elementary School.
It is Oct. 30, 2010. We will be on site from about 10-2. Set up and break-down about half hour on either side.
If possible I would love to showcase both our heavy fighters and light fighters this year. Can we get the heavies down here? This would be a demo. I don't think we can do bopper bats - Cathal??? or whack a knight? We would be allowed to keep part of the proceeds this year if we can do these two big "hits" from our past we can make a little money for the event / revel.
Please get back with me if you can do a demo of your specific talent at the Fall Fest. I will do an illumination class - with a paint in the lines type of activity for the kids. Who's in this year?
Shire of Trisel Revel 2010
Shire of Trisel Revel 2010
Cathal the Black Rogue brought up a wonderful idea, and we are going to go through this idea the best we can.
January marks our one year anniversary for officially being a shire. On a yearly basis, we as a shire should have some sort of "Celebration" and even an event in the future. But there are still many things we need to get in order to hold an event, so this year we will hold a Revel. Think of it as a shire only "Event - but not an event" for the weekend.
The weekend prior to Thanksgiving (The 3rd weekend of the month) will be our Shire yearly local "celebration". This year being November 19th, 20th, and 21st.
The details need to be ironed out a bit more, but the basics would be, check in Friday afternoon ... Saturday would have some fighting, classes, and a feast.
Feast would be $10, preferably paid in advance, and class admission would require a non-perishable food item.
It's the weekend before Thanksgiving, what a great way to give back to the community and do a food drive as a shire. For every food item donated, a token would be given to show the instructor that you "paid" for the class. I could get into more details, but then this email would be mega long .. so if you want more information, please respond to this email.
Also, as we grow as a shire, what kind of reputation would you like to be known as? By the end of the meeting a number of us thought it would be a good idea to be known for our Hospitality, especially for newbies to SCA. Whether it's a local get together (our social gatherings on Friday night), or a Kingdom event, we would help those get acquainted and familiar with what goes on.
With that said, on Friday nights, if you still need garb - now that we have our Revel in sight, and you would like something made, T-Tunics are a great starter piece of period clothing. And it's real simple to make. All you need to bring with you is a woven shirt that fits you comfortably and a bed sheet that fits around your body - normally a full or queen size would work just fine. Local thrift shops and goodwill and other shops like that you can find sheets for a great price. We will make you a t-tunic (Dress for women - shirt for men (men then would need scrubs pants for bottoms) during the Friday night social night, or during a specified Craft gathering. All with the focus to get you ready for an event. Then to give it shape, you would just need a belt, leather works fine, black or anything in the brown family of colors.
If you think you would like to have a t-tunic made for you, please respond and I can give more details.
Bring a woven shirt (button down) with you this Friday and we can get your tunic started!! :)
If anyone is interested in Tablet Card Weaving, please respond to this email - Thora has graciously informed me that she is willing to do a series of classes, if the interest is there.
OK, I'm sure I'm forgetting information .. but we have some time till our Revel, oh yeah ... at the Revel, please start thinking about any excess material, crafting supplies, tokens, etc that you would like to trade with other members - we'll be setting it up like a Market Square.
OH also, Tuchux fighters - If you would like to participate and fight in our Revel, it is considered an official SCA "Event" so you would need to be approved to fight in the SCA, with the correct gear and such, Please get with our heavies to make sure you all can play together :)
